Georgien 39 --> Viburnum orientale

gezeigt wird ein kleiner Strauch. Die weit verbreitete Gattung ist wieder in meinem R/B gelistet, die hier gezeigte Westasiatische Art nicht.

Der Fundort war im Surami-Gebirge in der Nachbarschaft von Pontischem Rhdodendron (Georgien 30) und auch von dem gerade in Georgien 38 vorgestellten Gehölz.

Prof. Schmidt told us, that this was Viburnum orientale. And GRIN also carries it as a separate species. Hawever, I cannot tell you the difference. And my photos probably are not enough to differentiate between the two species.

come to Luxembourg - both species grow together here, they are quiet different. Will tell you later the specifics, but clearly both can be separated, perhaps only as nothotaxa... (?).

Hi Jan,

I collected material from our plants. The Viburnum orientale is from seed from Georgia. I hope that tormi can place the picture here later.

The two Viburnum are quite different, even in winter.

Viburnum orientale has more acute buds (opulus: rounded) , a bluish waxy surface at the younger twigs (opulus: no waxy layer, brown), very few lenticells (opulus many), but the most prominent feature is the buds:
V. orientale has clearly visible opposite pairs of bud scales (which make it clear that Vib. orientale belongs to section Odontotinus), where Vib. opulus has a connected bud scale (section Opulus).

The leaves, now not existant, are more rugose at V. orientale.

Both species have red fruits, which is intersting specially in section Odontotinus - in this section "Old World" species such as Vib. betulifolium and Vib. hupehensis have red fruits such as Vib. orientale, in "New World" species of sectio Odontotinus many have black fruits (like Vib. dentatum).
The sectio Odontotinus contains somewhat a mixture of diverse species.

@Wolf: Viburnum orientalis hat (nach Literatur und Beobachtung) stets dreigelappte Blätter, V. opulus z.T. auch 3-5lappig. Auf deinen Bildern ist stets die Dreilappigkeit gegeben, auch ist das Blatt "gewellter" (rugos) als bei typischen V. opulus. Deshalb denke ich, dass Du auch tatsächlich V. orientale abbildest. Zugegebnermassen schwierig als Rätsel, da die Unterschiede zu V. opulus nicht gut erkennbar sind.
