Hallo, guten Abend, das sind wirklich tolle Bilder. Vielen Dank Jan!

Ich bin aber verwirrt und muss als Laie fragen. Was heißt das hier mit dem Subgenus ... with the Acuminatae, Asperae, Lentae ..... ? Gibt es da eine allgemeinverständliche einfache Erklärung?

Und was ich eigentlich fragen wollte, bevor ich die tollen Bilder sah: Wo findet man denn Betula pumila, sie ist doch ziemlich selten?

Hallo Roseo,

wie viele Gattungen (Acer, Quercus,..) ist auch die Gattung Betula so reich an Arten, dass sie in Untergattungen gegliedert ist (Nipponobetula, Acuminatae, Asperae und Betula). Diese Untergattungen sind dann teilweise nochmal in Sektionen (zB. Lentae, Dahuricae,..) geteilt.
Hier werden eng verwandte Arten mit gemeinsamen Merkmalen zusammengefasst. Das ganze dient einer einfacheren Klassifikation der Gattung.

Als Anhang noch eine Tabelle die auch aus Jan's Schlüssel stammt. Leider etwas klein geraten.

The subgenera are roughly groupings, there still can be some what discussion. The Betula specialists are not all thinking the same.
There is a lot of molecule work investigation.
So what you see on the table (composed by P. de Spoelberch) and on my images is in fact an overview of the genus, based on the major theories we could collect during let us say this year and as we could understand it.
And we are all awaiting the monograph on Betula by Hugh McAllister and Kenneth Ashburner, to finally have a more 'stable' systematic overview.

Guten Abend und vielen Dank für die Antworten. Das ist ja eine extreme Detail-Tiefe, die ein R/B beispielsweise gar nicht abbildet. Dort lese ich, dass Betula ca. 100 Arten in temperierten und artischen Zonen hat. Dass diese nochmal unterteilt werden, ist mir neu. Um das nachzuvollziehen, muss man wohl ganz andere Literatur studieren.
Gehört Betula zu den besonders Artenreichen Gattungen?

As 'we' understand the genus Betula now,
there are about 30-35 species. So no 100 at all like in the Kew checklist Fagaceae of Govaerts and Frodin.

To study the genus you at least can use the folowing literature, as I used for my key:

This key is based on characteristics, visible during the longest possible period of the year.
Species in general represented in collections are assembled. Below some taxa are referred to synonymy or relatives, as I think I can conclude from the recent views of several specialists in the genus.


To improve practice:

- Examine only the two mature leaves at base of long shoot and/or de leaves of short shoots unless otherwise mentioned. Depending the taxon, all other leaves can differ enormously in size and lateral vein number!!!
- Beware of hybridisation, especially with plants raised from seed gathered in collections.
