Unbekannter Baum ? ---> Ehretia acuminata
Hallo Baumfreunde !
Gruss vom Hannes

In the question a very important feature is given:
lamina is very rough so Boraginaceae
the bark is surprisingly deeply rigged
see
here at Birr castle
for (one of?) probably the largest examples in Europe

From my first replay on I was somewhat in doubt about the exact species.
'Macrophylla' wrote 'lamina very rough', so Ehretia dicksonii is like rough sandpaper.
But I took some leaves from specimens in my herbarium and also other members of the genus are rough leaved.
So I have the feeling I better change the taxon in
Ehretia acuminata.
Also this one has such a trunk at maturity.
But the lamina is
1) less rough adaxially
2) more elongated or oblanceolate and fit much more these on the images above (Ehretia dicksonii leaves are really exceptional rough, even after drying and pressing in a herbarium, these of Ehretia acuminata also are still rough to the touch).
3) petiole is glabrous, not rough stellate hairy
4) secondary veins are more curved than in Ehretia dicksonii
see for Ehretia acuminata

Schön, wieder was dazugelernt.

Hello Jan,
very interesting. I never heard anything about it.
From where does it come? Is it an exotic tree which can survive in Belgium or is it an old and rare species?
Does anybody know if there are Ehretia trees in Germany? Is it possible to find one in a forest or in Botanical gardens only?
Best regards
Frank
