Pseudotsuga menziesii is indeed a good candidate. (some forms does not smell, like glauca ) The smell of crushed leaves and esp. the buds is one of sweet apples , not of oranges (this should be more Abies-like eg. Abies nordmanniana or concolor etc. , and this is not the case here). grtjs Jan

plants at this stage of development are tricky to identify but the oak list mentioned higher and also my picture on http://oaks.of.the.world.free.fr/quercus_morisii.htm are all examples of subgenus Quercus section cerris , or section Cerris × section Quercus while I see, if I am not wrong here bris...
